Youssou N'Dour WINNER!
Los Angeles, California, USA - The National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences, Inc., also known as The Recording Academy, announced this evening the winners of the 47th Annual Grammy Awards. The annual event took place in Los Angeles at the Staples Center. Senegalese singer Youssou N'Dour won the contemporary world music Grammy with his album Egypt..............

Youssou N'dour won the Mobo's inaugural 'Best African Act'  award, voted for exclusively by music fans in Africa.

Probably the African artist most people in the West have heard of because of his '7 Seconds' smash hit with Neneh Cherry, recordings with Paul Simon and Peter Gabriel and touring alongside Bruce Springsteen, Sting and Tracy Chapman. His recent appearences at Live8 concerts saw him dueting with Dido, wowing global audiences. Senegalese N'Dour, whose multiple-octave vocal range would surely make Mariah Carey jealous, is the pioneer of Mbalax, an up-tempo blend of African, Caribbean, and pop rhythms.
